Come experience a wonderful and moving show about the things that make life worth living. Tonight there will be a celebration of this gift we have received from over 30 community artists who put their souls into making pieces that speak from the heart. It is truly amazing what these folks have done and it is for all of us to share and enjoy. Come on down and share some food, drink and inspiration.

ALTAR FOR RISING SUN TRIBES
scrap wood and thread

The power of nature is the source of all.
Waves bring life to the Island, but on this occasion,
they took likfe away.  The repetitive cycle of life.
The sun continues to shine.

We pray for healing and hope.

One day soon, those affected will wake up
to the beautiful sun, rested.

Manufacturing Stoke World Premiere May 21st.

The world premiere of Manufacturing Stoke will be held at Bird's Surf Shed May 21st.

Tickets are being presold now at www.manufacturingstoke.com. If you want to go, hurry. I heard from Pierce half are taken and it's only been up for a couple of days!

The film will feature some amazing body surfing and will highlight Enjoy Handplanes as well. We have been so stoked to be a part of this film. The people behind it are the most inspiring thing of all. Pierce, Petra, Geoffrey and Max and all the people who have contributed are doing this for the right reasons, to educate and inspire us to to make a change.  I love it.

About the film:

No other sport is so intrinsically linked to nature. Some call it a spiritual experience, most call it indescribable. And yet, in becoming the multi-billion dollar industry it is today, a great paradox has risen. Surfers are indeed directly connected to the earth’s pulse and yet a majority of the materials used are environmentally toxic.

The story begins in the 1960’s, the golden era of surfing, a time of innocence and discovery. Surf culture erupted onto the collective consciousness and became the epitome of cool. Fast forward to December 5th, 2005 and the closing of Clark Foam for environmental reasons, the largest surf blanks manufacturer in the world. Not only was the event a wake-up call for many to shift from petroleum-base products to more eco-friendly materials, it also reframed the foundation of a stagnant culture.

Enter surfing’s renaissance, an era where the new generation is completely changing what it means to be a surfer. And amid timid efforts from the industry’s biggies, a plethora of grassroots up-and-comers is redefining what a surfer is supposed to ride. From wooden surfboards, handplanes and alaias to recycled blanks and organic clothing, wave riding is taking on a new soul.

Manufacturing Stoke is an introspective look into the surfing culture’s struggle to be beneficial unto itself, a tapestry of both influential and eclectic members of the surfing community that are constantly striving for positive change.

Below is a piece I choose to share as it is very special. Please take a look and read about David's Lecours' Altar.

Artist Statement:
I was born on August 13, 1968. Just eleven days after my birth, on August 24, 1968, my father was killed when his Navy F-4 Phantom jet crashed into the sea as a result of a blown tire/catapult accident off the USS Constellation aircraft carrier. Prior to impact, he was able to pull the ejection lever which ejected the rear pilot to safety. After an exhaustive search, both the plane and my father's body were never recovered.

I never got to meet my father, Bill Heep, so creating this altar was a way for me to connect with him. Fortunately, Bill's mom, my grandmother, saved nearly all of Bill's memorabilia. In preparing this altar, I discovered a reel-to-reel audio tape Bill created in June of 1968. He made the recording in his room aboard the USS Constellation off the coast of Vietnam. I am grateful that the content from the tape was easily transferred to CD at a local lab. This recording gave me the opportunity to hear my father's voice for the first time. Reusing the old door allows a series of windows into different eras of Bill's life. Since his body was never recovered from the accident, the altar serves as a physical reminder of his life.

My name was originally David William Heep. After my father's death, my mother married Tom Lecours. When I was 3 1/2, Tom Lecours adopted me and I became David William Lecours.

Bio:
David Lecours is Creative Director at LecoursDesign, a marketing and brand agency helping professional service firms to attract great clients and talent. David uses LecoursDesign as a laboratory to monitor creative process and the art of presenting ideas. He then generously shares this knowledge through coaching  , speaking   and training seminars  . David is married and also loves surfing, gardening and practicing yoga in his hometown of Encinitas, California.

Made in Taiwan

This is Sigmund, he was made in Taiwan. He was a rescued street dog that was brought here by a woman who was on vacation, found him as a puppy on the street and brought him back with her. He later went on to a rescue center and then landed the lucky role of dog number two of the Anne and Kirk Fagergrin house hold. He is one lucky pup and Anne and Kirk are just as fortunate.

Sigmund also has some serious talent. He's only a year or so old and is trying out to be a  therapy dog to work with kids at Children's Hospital. Look at the patience he's got. It's amazing. He's going to do great with the kids.

My hat's off to the woman who brought Sigmund back and congratulations to Anne and Kirk for scoring such a good new best friend.

Photography by Kevin Roche

Kevin Roche is an amazing photographer. I had the pleasure of meeting him at Sacred Craft in Santa Cruz. The funny thing was I have seen his images everywhere and didn't put it together that he was the man behind some of my favorite images. If you get a chance stop by his blog for some eyeball ecstasy. If you love images, especially surf images, you'll love his site. *Enjoy
