Erik and Lauren's New Keel Fish

Erik came over with his new board, a 5'10" custom painted Roy Sanchez Keel Fish. The board was painted by Erik and his lovely Girlfriend Lauren. The two have been waiting for this board to get back for a while now and are super stoked to get her in the water.

It was fun for me to watch this board take shape. It started out with the two of them going to Roy's and helping him shape it. Then they took her home and painted her up and sent her off to get glassed. The finished result turned out really cool. I love the fins as well. Great work guys. Only question I have is... can I ride it?

A Few Shots of the Grain

This week I met up with Murphy to get the Grain signed before it gets glassed. Dennis looked it over and checked out my fine sanding and gave it his stamp of approval. He was also able to get rid of a ding I put in it. Thank you Dennis!  All and and all she is a beauty. Next post will be the glass job.

Mini Tudor Bat

Jay from Slider Mag was one of the guys who took us up on our offer for a free mini blank from Cowboy Dan. He was so stoked to get this thing. I got to chat with him when he picked it up. A super cool guy.  He has a fun site as well so check it out.

Here's the finished board.  It is modeled after a Tudor Bat. Dimensions are 9 1/2" lx 2 1/4" w x 1/4" t. It has some nose concave, 50/50 to sharper rails in the tail. It was hand sanded to perfection. Cool board Jay! Thanks for sharing.

DIY Longboard Fin by Kipp

These photos and email came in from Kipp today. He was super stoked to try making his own fin. Turned out cool and if you are in a pinch for cash and need a fin he has proven you can do it yourself. Thanks for sharing Kipp. I love the whole idea.

Hey Ed,
Got to try out my scrap plywood DIY fin this weekend and it worked great I couldn't tell the difference from my $65 fin and I love the organic look it gives the board. Here's a few shots of the whole process.

Don't Do Labor... Do Art.

On this fine Labor Day Alia and I decided to do the anti-labor, Art. It's not work if you love it, right? For today's art project we made a Grain Keel tee. It was fun and I'm really stoked on how it turned out. Besides, now that my Grain has been shaped and is waiting to be glassed I just can't help but feel the love for all things Grain. The board has been sitting in my house smelling of wood goodness. Humm, the smell of sawdust in the morning. I hope to have her glassed soon. Until then I'll be staring at her and wearing my tee with pride.

Low Fi Nipple Tonight at the Leucadian

A night you won't want to miss. My friend John Finkbinner and crew bring the LoFi Nipple band back together for another show at the Leucadian. If you were in Leucadia in the late 90's you remember these guys.  Guaranteed entertainment and debauchery.  Free for all but space is limited. Also rumor has it that our very own Miss Anne and the lovely Judy Finkbiner are coming out of retirement to do a little GoGo dancing one more time for The LoFi Nipple band!!

Uncle Rodney's House of Fun/Fins

Alia and I were hanging out with Rondey yesterday doing some art and we couldn't help but play with the collection of fins he has. Here are just a few. Checkout the Brewer (upper left) and the little rock fin he found on the beach. Thanks Rodney for the art lessons and the photos!

Single Fin Tee

I've been wanting to make some more fin tees so I asked Chris to stop by with a tracing of his favorite fin. He showed up with a Fins Unlimited 7" fin that he loves. The end result turned out pretty cool. It was fun to make. Once we had the template I cut out a stencil, reinforced it with a little duct tap, painted on some bleach and voila... single fin tee. If you want to try one out at home give it a shot and send me a photo.

Portfolio - Maggie Marsek

I really like to show off the work of local photographers. It makes me feel good to show the hard work they do. One that I really like is Maggie Marsek. She is, in my view, exceptional. I always love looking at her work and get such a good vibe from it. She has a really unique sense of color and perspective and she captures the energy of the moment. Here are a few shots that jumped out at me from her site. Check it out for yourself. Enjoy.

Leucadia Art Walk

Leucadia Art Walk was pretty amazing. It was huge. I barely put a dent into it and I was there a couple of hours. I was impressed with how well it went off and what a good time everyone was having. Below are just a few of the shots I got. Enjoy.

Scott Saw is always a local favorite. Scott grew up in Leucadia doing art and surfing.

I liked this Image. It is by local Artist Lisa Reinhardt.

One of the coolest things they did was have a parasol program. Pick one, walk a bit and set it down for the next person to use. Very cool. We should implement a board program like that.

The music this year was good. Everywhere you went there was something to groove to.

This piece was one of a table full of some really cool carvings. The artist was Mic Yarbrough. I'm hoping I can get him to do some wax art for us as well.

I found these on a side road. These guys had a bunch of really cool old school spreads framed up.

What can I say. I had to stop and take a photo.  That's my kind of ride. Electra bike complete with board rack and fish.

Lots of cameras out there as well. Here's a shot of Lisa from Swell Stuff shooting me shooting her. Swell Stuff is a great little shop that repairs wetsuits. They are a good addition to the neighborhood as it is better to keep that rubber on your back rather then in the landfill.

Now this was the highlight for me. Kari and Ben from Olive & Ivy, a little Leucadia apparel company, were out showing off there tees. This is one that is a huge seller. It's called Eat, Sleep, Surf.  Here's a shot of Kirk who on many-o-days lives the dream.

More cool tees by Olive & Ivy. I found their site one night be accident and spent a good hour looking at all their tees getting inspired. They have such cool designs.

Anne and Daisy showing off her favorite tee.
