The Iron Cross is already turning into Handplanes

Kipp doesn't waste any time. With the fresh foam from the Iron Cross, Kipp has been busy making some new handplanes. He has been getting inspired and going nuts with the resin tents. He's making me wait to post the final boards but here's a hint of what one is going to look like. He got the idea from a piece of  tie die that was laying around.  Enjoy.

More Foam for Handplanes

Thanks to Phil Gonzalez we have more foam for our handplane project. Phil, a longtime Leucadia local,  hooked us up with a buckled circa 1996 Iron Cross 9'0.  The board will yield a good bounty of foam for plenty of handplane fun. For his generosity Phil received our last Leucadia Project tee and a couple of wax buddies. Not a bad score for an old board destine to be dumped.

The bonus was that the board was shaped by our good friend Dennis Murphy. It was board number 7087 in fact. The cool thing is that once we get the board milled down to handplane blanks we are going to get Dennis to shape his own version. It will be pretty cool to see him shape the same foam he shaped 14 years earlier! I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Broken Board Handplanes by Kipp Denslow

For a while now I have been thinking about what to do with the countless broken boards I see at the beach and in peoples yards. Boards that will never see water again and will eventually end up in the land fill. 

The idea of these once beloved boards ending up in the trash just because they got snapped bugged me. It was a waste for one and cruel to a board that was once free and spent its time in the water. 

After some thought and some inspiration from Cyrus Sutton, Danny Hess and Brown Fish for their wood handplanes, Kipp Denslow and I started playing with the idea of turning these old boards into something new. Something that we could reshape into a new beloved friend of the wave riding persuasion. 

The result of this project was something that has completely opened my mind to a new world of wave riding. The goal to save broken boards turned into something much more. It turned into fun!

With Kipp as the shaper and glasser and me as the broken board hunter and test pilot we are setting out to clean up the landfills and have fun while doing it.  So if you have a broken board and it will go into the trash, give us a shout and we will take it off your hands. Who knows, maybe you'll see that board again in the water someday?

Tangelo Fish by Rodney McCoubrey

Inspired by his tangelo tree he works next to in his back yard, Rodney made this piece as a tribute to the beauty of the color orange and especially the tangerine pearlescence that his fruit emanates in early morning sunlight with dew on it.  

It's a big one at almost 40 inches wide and it's for sale. Made from street sweeper blades, camper shell skin, old nails, recycled plywood, love and lots of tangelo munchin.

Steve Klinsky Ceramics at Encinitas City Hall

My friend and local ceramic artist Steve Klinsky is showing his work at Encinitas City Hall. He just had a show at the Library as well. I have been very lucky to acquire a number of pieces from him over  the years. His work inspires me and his glazes are amazing. He gas fires his work and can spend up to 14 hours managing his firings.

David's Surfline Shot

Here's a cool little sequence David sent over. Two things I love about these. One, the first shot with the pelicans in the background. It's just soulful. Two is the last shot with him in the tube with a dry reef below. That just shows commitment.
