ArtHaus-2: Certified LEED Platinum

ArtHaus-2: 1491 Neptune Avenue REMODEL

My friend and fellow fish riding, handplane loving, Leucadian Rich Williams sent over these photos of a project he did over the last few years. He has just received news that it achieved the U.S. Green Building Council's highest "Platinum" LEED certification.  It is the second "LEED for Homes" single family residence project to be certified in San Diego county, and the first to achieve certification in the City of Encinitas.  LEED stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.   It is a internationally recognized and rigorous rating system that not only covers energy and water efficiency, but also indoor air quality, the durability of a home, the use of eco-friendly materials,  community connectivity,  awareness and education of the building's occupants, and construction waste management.  Not only shall the buyer of this home be assured that they live in a truly eco-friendly and healthy home, they can enjoy owning an architectural beauty as well as having stupendous ocean views from the second story.  Yes, you can also see how the good the surf is too! Love it.

Rich, well done my friend. If you want to see more of the house check out his site. www.arthaushome.com/

Latest Short by Nathan Oldfield

Our friend Nathan Oldfield shared this clip with us of Dane Peterson doing his thing. I like Nathan's work because it is always inspiring and very dreamy. You get lost in it the way he uses focal points, edits and music. It's like you could check in and live there for a while and be very happy.  Watching Dane on a point break makes me wish I lived in Byron Bay. I could use some nice long right hand points right about now. The kind that you can see bend down the beach as you go down the line. Enjoy.

Movie of the Week - Fins

I watched this one a few weeks ago. I liked it. It's about the surf anything mentality.

Surfy Surfy Handplane

If you get a chance stop by Surfy Surfy to check out JP's St. Pierre's handplane we did together. Designed and painted by JP, shaped by me and glassed by Kipp. This thing is so cool. I had no idea JP had such a talent for drawing. JP really wanted to make a handplane that looked like the Bonzer Bumble Bee so we made this little beauty with a diamond tail.

This one is not for sale as he liked it so much he kept it for him himself. However we are making more and if you want one just let us know and JP will paint it up for you.

Dom's fish

Our friend Dom De Pietro shaped his first fish with the help of Ryan Burch. It’s a 5-5" ( x 20 1/2?) and made from a Skip Frye template.  It's the first poly board he has shaped (after building 4 Alaia wood boards).  His friends at Hot Sauce glassing in oceanside helped Dominic laminate the board. Dom is a great surfer. Can wait to get some shots of him on it.

The Wave by Cheryl Sorg

My friend and local artist Cheryl Sorg sent this over to me. It's titled "The Wave".  For those who don't know her work she makes art out of the words and sentences in books. All the lines you see are words cut from the book and reassembled into form. This piece is made from the short story by Haruki Murakami called 'The Seventh Man' in which a man tells the story of witnessing his best friend being washed away by a giant wave in a typhoon when he was a kid, and how that event affected the rest of his life.

This piece and others will be on display at the Eric Phleger Gallery.

Opening for the show is Thursday Oct. 7th 6-8pm

New Blog in Town - @ Sea by Lauren Tolford

Our very own Lauren Tolford has a new blog. We feature her all the time and it will be great to have a place to see all her latest work. Go check it out. www.createatsea.blogspot.com

"This blog will chronicle a new journey in my life. I am going back to my roots. "Dream. Create. Surf."

Growing up I was told that being an artist wasn't the best choice for a wealthy life, so I decided to use my artistic talent to gain a degree in Fashion from FIDM. Now that I have that expensive little piece of paper, not much has happened. I am tired of trying to gain a corporate job in an industry full of unauthentic people. I am going back to what comes natural: creating. I will be posting my work inspired by love, life, and adventures on land and @SEA."

Double Aussie Feature - Searching for Michael Peterson and Bustin' Down The Door

Two films worth watching. Searching for MP is sort of haunting. A good story as well as classic 70's surfing. Bustin' Down the Door is another great bit of history. If you haven't seen them yet I recommend them. Bustin' Down the Door is on NetFlix as well.

Erik's Moon Plug

Our good friend Erik Baldwin finally got his experimental board done called the Moon Plug.  He and Dennis Murphy got together on this project and co-created it. It was Erik's brain child and he even did the art and glasswork on it.  I'm hoping to take her for a spin! Here's what he had to say about it.

Well, she's finally done! ...and her maiden voyage this evening was  spectacular! I can't explain how cool this board feels under my feet!  its quite a responsive yet very retro-ish' in how it glides through  flat sections. As for the performance, it seemed as if the better the  wave, the more it opened up.  Foot positioning was also very  comfortable, as the sweet spot seemed to be pretty big! It was hard to  do something wrong!  Oh yeah, it flys really well! Punts are a natural  reaction for this plug! Yew! ... Sorry it took so long.

RM Lewis

(Taken at Future of Surfing Fair,
Solana Beach Cove, CA, September 25, 2010)

My dad shot this yesterday of an unknown kid at the Future of Surfing event. It is such a classic photo. Blow it up, you can see his tongue sticking out and how focused he is. This kid IS the future. I love it.

(Note: If you are the parents and would like a free print let me know and I'll connect you with my dad.)

Enjoy The Ride - by David Gray and Ed Lewis

David Gray and I went to shoot Chris Del Moro last Friday and we ended up missing him. As we drove back home we saw this left and David spun around and he told me to suit up. It was pretty good sized and throwing. I was a little hesitant at first and then decided what the heck. I had all my gear, why not?

This was the second wave of the session. I got this, hit the bottom and went right in. I was sort of freaked. You can see it in my face. David has a way of getting you to do things you normally wouldn't. He is like surfing viagra. He showed me some shots and got me back out again. It was a blast! Best tube I've ever had. It looked like it was 20 foot from the inside laying down. The GoPro footage was cool but the stills I have in my mind are priceless.

Thanks David for hooking me up with the shots. Seriously if you ever need someone to nail a session with great shots go to him. He has the magic touch for sure. Again thanks to Rick at GoPro for the camera!!!!

"Gordo, Starbuck & Dicky Mo" by John Culqui

Latest artist version by John Culqui came out beautifully! John has become a big fan of our handpanes and wanted his own to paint up. He did this one as a tribute to Moby Dick. Pretty classic.

If you'd like your own blank canvas let us know. Enjoy!

"Green Spring Flower Thing" On Display at Encinitas Library

My friend and local Eco Artist Rodney McCoubrey spearheaded this years community art project which is now on display at the Encinitas Library for a year. The project was made possible with the help of about 20 local volunteers and tons of kids and parents at this years EEDAY Festival. It was also generously supported by our local city art program coordinator Jim Gilliam who has been a huge support of our local artist throughout the year. Among the crew of volunteers where a few of my friends, Anne and Kirk Fagergren, John Gjata, Corey Messor, Steve Kwik, Mary Fleener, Marc Lathrop, Dave and Holly Lecour, Tak and Jamie Di Dio Aoyama, Jeramy and the high school crew, and Jan Rogers (she was like 6 people in one. you rock Jan!) to name a few.

If you get a chance go to the library to check it out. It is displayed on the north side.

If you helped in this pat yourself on the back. You did great!!!
