Vote for Rasta!

Our good friend Mick Waters has done a collaboration with Dave Rastovich for a short they entered to the new Taylor Steele Innersection video. It is up now. If you are a fan of Dave's or Mick go to the site and vote for them. I love the short becuase it is the only one that I saw that has bodysurfing and classic fluid soul surfing. A huge and needed contrast to all the airs.

Watch it, enjoy and if you dig it vote for them!

Movie Screening of "Heart of the Sea" this Saturday.

Our friend Tony Kendall is putting this on. Should be fun for a good cause.

Celebrate & learn about the life of Rell Kapolioka'ehukai Sunn with a movie screening fundraiser: Heart of the Sea!

The Rell Sunn Educational Fund and Kapolioka’ehukai Outrigger Canoe Club are having a special event this Saturday, August 27th to support the cancer research, environmental education, and the sports of surfing and outrigger canoe paddling. The beautiful Arterra Lounge located at the Del Mar Marriott will host the evening filled with music, hula, live and silent auction and a screening of the film Heart Of The Sea, the award winning documentary about Rell Sunn.

Rell Sunn was the first female lifeguard in Hawaii and she and her friends started the Women’s Professional Surfing association in the 1970’s. Her grace and style and spirit of giving back to the community was inspirational. The RSEF continues to support the many causes that Auntie Rell believed in and continues with their yearly children’s Menehune Surf Contest now going into its 37th year.

Tickets range from $15 to $30 and the night will have food, drinks, hula, and aloha. Some of the items featured in the live and silent auction are a fantastic find. There is a VIP Package for two to the 2012 Super Bowl game, signed Paul McCartney Guitar, signed Carlos Santana guitar, signed U2 Joshua Tree album, signed Rolling Stone album, trip for two to Costa Rica, family of four package to Orlando, signed Justin Beiber photo, and much much more.

The evening is supported by Primo Beer, Smartwater, Arterra at San Diego Marriott, Essence Coconut Water, Star 94.1 and Pau Hana.
Tickets are available at www.heartoftheseacanoeclub.com <http://www.heartoftheseacanoeclub.com>       or www.rellsunn.com <http://www.rellsunn.com>       for more info and tickets.
Thank you and Mahalo for your support and interest

Nathan Oldfield's Stillbirth and Surfing A Grief Story

From our friend Nathan Oldfield.

"Mark Twain said that there aren’t enough words in all the languages in the world to express the sorrow of losing a child. This is a short film I produced while grieving for my daughter, Willow, who was stillborn.

This short actually forms the centrepiece of a feature length surf film I made, called Seaworthy. Since the film’s release, I have received many heartfelt words of sympathy & encouragement. There have been scores of letters & emails from surfers from all over the world that have been sensitive & authentic & moving. I have been especially touched by the messages from those who have travelled their own grief journeys. I am awed & humbled that my work somehow resonated with others’ broken hearts.

A common theme echoed among the beautiful feedback I’ve received is that the story deserves a wider audience. Surf films, by definition, appeal to only a limited demographic, & the kind of surf films I make are left-of-centre even within surfing circles. So I decided to post this online, in the hope that it may reach a few others, especially those who may be living with loss & longing.

All of us experience & express grief in varied ways, which is a good thing since we’re all different. Because I’m a surfer, this is how I gave expression to my experience of bereavement.

Thanks for taking the time to watch. [Nathan]"

You have to see this...

Our friend Eli Mirandon got the cover of Slide Magazine. I snagged these shots from his blog.

Below is what he wrote.

"trunking it in dec in san diego on an solid agave board with a torrey pines wood stringer i built (the same as the trees up on the cliff behind me)"

Just think about that... mid 50 degree water, trunking it, no leash on a solid day at blacks, on a board built by himself on sustainable local materials. Top it off got the cover of Slide and some amazing shots. Eli, my hats off to you my friend, you're amazing.

Pierce in his Element

The bummer is that this photo has no sound. If it did you'd hear his trademark seal bark as he enters the barrel. From the beach you might look away and not see him catch a wave. Then you know he is in a barrel as you can hear the bark. Hanging out with Pierce is pure entertainment, in or out of the water.

Matt Jung form Wellen put on a very cool, first I've ever I've heard of, Body Surfing Art Show at their old HQ. Complete with original artwork by the artists Skye Walker, Keiron [Seamouse] Lewis, Ciro Bicudo, Jen Peters, Anthony Faucheuxthat who work with Wellen.

We were lucky enough to get invited to join in on the fun. For our part we brought eight handplanes to display along with a little impromptu wave sculpture I made out of scrap card board and hemp string complete with little hemp string bodysurfer. (Not pictured but added in the night by Kipp was a beer tab for an handplane.)

Thanks to Matt from Wellen for inviting us!
Thanks to all the artists that participated in making the Art Colab models with us! If anyone wants a handplane painted up by one of them let us know.

As more pictures come in from the event we'll post them.

Tak + enjoy = Artist Collaboration #9

Our friend and local Leucadia artist Tak Aoyama just dropped off a handplane he painted up for us for our artist collaboration project. He's the 9th artist we have worked with to date  and he came back with a handplane that blew us away. It is so unique, beautiful and subliminal.

I love Tak's work because he thinks everything through. You will never hear out of Tak's mouth that there is something like a color  in his painting just because he likes that color. If something is in the painting it is because it has deep meaning to him and it conveys a message related to the overall piece. You can look at his work multiple times and find new things you missed the first few times around.

All and all we are so stoked that Tak is on board to paint up some handplanes with us. This artist collaboration project is turning out to be so much fun.  If you'd like one like this (I think this one is going to hang on our wall!) then let us know and we'll connect you with Tak to do one special for you. Thank you Tak!!! Great job.

Leucadia love

I often find these heart shaped cobbles myself and seem to always take them home with me. I just can’t help it. I’m always amazed by them and how they were formed. When I got this photo from Alison I couldn’t help but spread the Leucadia love.

Taped Off - One of my new favorite blogs

photo-766718.JPG.jpg

Peter St Pierre is a legend in Leucadia but more importantly the world of surfing. We are lucky to have him on our planet. He of course is the one that paints those trippy universe scenes on surfboards for his company Moonlight Glassing. I think it's been around for 30 or 40 years. Kipp and I have always looked up to him and somehow I just found his own blog called Taped Off. I love the about...

ABOUT

I really like making surfboards. Shots from our shop Moonlight Glassing. Plus anything else I think is cool. think of this blog as a spinoff of Surfy Surfy but with crappier photos and more typos. --Peter St Pierre

A while back JP passed off one of our handplanes to him at the shop and months later he handed this off to JP. The writing on the bottom said "Enjoy The Universe". We were so stoked he did this I couldn't get the smile off my face for months. I still get a warm fuzzy every-time I look at this. THANK YOU PETER!!!!

At any rate his new blog is a few months old now and filled with tons for great posts from Moonlight Glassing. It is worth a daily click for sure.  Enjoy!
