Swamis' Magic

For only the second time in my life I surfed Swamis yesterday. I have always avoided the spot due to over crowding. I'm known to stay as local as much as possible but some friends were meeting up there and I decided to give it a shot. I went down not to expect much but ended up having a great time. The energy there is really amazing. It reminded me of surfing Malibu a few years ago. There is something about these sacred spots that have a certain energy that is different than others.

The shot above was from 2005. I printed them out for my friends that Christmas for gifts. When I was at my friend Jason's house he had a copy on his wall. I had completely forgotten I had even taken this shot. I really like it. It shows the personality of Swamis on those huge swells, complete with huge sneaker sets and multiple people on a wave. My neighbor Cheryl sent this over the other day. When I opened it I got both inspired and hungry. I love how she was thoughtful enough to send me a photo. However I would have been really impressed if she had saved me a slice! It looks so good. Hummm... pizza in the form of a fin. Does it get any better? Goda di! (Enjoy)

Surfrider Ponto Beach Clean Up Monday July 6th - Lots of Giveaways

Come join us at Ponto Beach, Monday July 6th from 8am to 11am. The clean up goes as far south as Grandview but all sign in and trash pick up will be at Ponto.  

My friends, Bob and Jan Rogers have been running the Ponto clean up for 11 years now.  The first year had only 12 people who showed up. Last year there were 125. Their biggest turn out yet. I give them a lot of respect for doing this event and the Beacon's Beach clean up each year. They are truly active in our community and are great role models. Thank you Bob and Jan and everyone who shows up on those mornings to give our beaches some love.

Read Your Surfer's Journal In Peace, Reuse The Packaging As An Art Project

One of my favorite things is to get the Surfer's Journal in the mail.  To open that mail box and find that package is like Christmas. Just like that favorite toy you got when your were 3, you know that for a few days you are going to be glued to that thing. It will be by your bed, in the living room, in the bath room and then finally on that spot on your book shelf where you proudly display your literary tastes for all your friends and family to see.  The SJ is special. It represents a maturity level that only a seasoned surfer can have. It says, I'm a surfer AND I can read.

The last time the journal came to the house I opened the package and sat down to read. This time my 3.5 year old daughter was there and became just as excited.  Although not for the SJ itself, but for the packaging it came in. Once that package was off, the crayons and the fins came out and the fun started. It was a magical moment. I got to read the journal in peace and she got to have an art project. Does it get any better then that?

Cowboy Keel

Cowboy Dan has been busy on the Murphy Ranch in the wood shop. He has been prolific is his fin blocks out of scrap wood. Here is a keel he made me out of shop scrap. It is really cool. I wish I had a set of LokBox's out of this.

Hummm. Dirty wax. It looks gross and smells just as bad but it's so much fun to make stuff with it.

After our hard work we did a dance off to some Beastie Boys.

With all the art shows going on this weekend and the promise of a swell showing up, Alia and I decided we better switch out the winter wax on Binki II, put on the summer coat, and make a new wax sculpture for the Mattson Benefit. 

After putting on some music we went to work. With months of wax build up it wasn't easy but we pulled it off. We sure could have used a Wax Buddy (J.P. can you hook a brother up?) With fresh dirty surf wax in hand we thought about it a bit and decided on our subject, a little wave we call "Rogue". 

In the spirit of the Mattson Family Art Benefit we are selling "Rogue Wave" for $20 or the highest bidder. All proceeds will be donated to the benefit.

Sirens: Photography by Liz Cockrum Opening Reception Sat. June 27th @6pm

This Saturday, June 27th, there is an opening reception for Cardiff local Liz Cockrum's series called Sirens at the Eric Phleger Gallery in Leucadia (828 N. Highway 101, Leucadia). If you haven't stopped by the Eric Phleger Gallery make an appointment to check it out. Eric is a guy who knows his art and is very interesting to talk to about the works in his gallery. As a Beacon's local, Eric has been working hard to bring fine surf art to our community and has put his heart and soul into this gallery to do that. He's got plans to feature more local artists as well as artists from the art world at large. 

This show that features Liz should be very interesting as she has been shooting the various aspects of the woman aquatic. She has a very interesting style and point of view that draws you in and keeps you looking. Stop by the reception from 6-8pm to meet Liz and check out her work.

Bro-Am Event at Moonlight June 27th Charity Auction Thursday 25th

The Switchfoot Bro-Am is this Saturday at Moonlight Beach. The event goes off every year and is for a good cause. The guys from Switchfoot are great and if you've ever seen them surf, you know they absolutely kill it. They all spend a good deal of time in local waters. The guys are super humble and I give them a lot of respect for being good role models and putting on an A class event for their fans.

The crew of pros that show up for the event is impressive. My favorite though is seeing Tom Curren surf our local breaks. I'm a product of the 80's and he is still one of my all time favorites.

If you want to support the charity that goes with the event you can do it tomorrow night.

Last week I went over to Fins Unlimited with Chris Miller to pick up a few fins he had made from Cowboy Dan's wood blocks. They turned out beautifully. While we were there Bob Bahne was kind enough to take time out to show us around. If you haven't already figured out from this site, I like fins. This was heaven to me.

Not only were there alot of fins but the history of that place is unreal. I've been getting custom fins made there for years. When I used to ride thrusters I got turned on to get sets made there of fiberglass fins to replace my plastic ones. It was the best move I ever made. You get so much more drive out of them. When I switched over to twin keels, the first thing I did was get a custom set made that pushed the pivot point of the fin forward, which made the fin flex like a rutter. I did a post a while back and they are still one of my favorite fins.

Even though I would get my fins there this was the first time I got to take a look around and talk shop with Bob. It was really a highlight. He promised to let me back in the place and take some more shots. I can't wait to go back and learn more about the fin making process. Thanks Bob for the time and the stories! If you need some fins don't hesitate to go over, talk shop, and order some custom fins. The quality is second to none and stories from Bob are priceless.

I met Jim through a friend of mine. He falls into the small world category. I met him, we started chatting and it came out we live about 300 yards away from each other. Apparently for quite a while and we never ran into each other before that day. Jim is a great guy and extremely talented. He is a photographer as well as musician. He and his band play local gigs each week at La Papagallo and other spots locally. His photography is beautiful and I have to admit it looks good on the site, however full size is even better. He shoots all his work with a 4"x 5" film camera so the resolution and quality is amazing. I am hoping that Jim will do a show someday locally to show off his work at full size. Until then this will have to do. Enjoy.
