Leucadia Art Walk

Leucadia Art Walk was pretty amazing. It was huge. I barely put a dent into it and I was there a couple of hours. I was impressed with how well it went off and what a good time everyone was having. Below are just a few of the shots I got. Enjoy.

Scott Saw is always a local favorite. Scott grew up in Leucadia doing art and surfing.

I liked this Image. It is by local Artist Lisa Reinhardt.

One of the coolest things they did was have a parasol program. Pick one, walk a bit and set it down for the next person to use. Very cool. We should implement a board program like that.

The music this year was good. Everywhere you went there was something to groove to.

This piece was one of a table full of some really cool carvings. The artist was Mic Yarbrough. I'm hoping I can get him to do some wax art for us as well.

I found these on a side road. These guys had a bunch of really cool old school spreads framed up.

What can I say. I had to stop and take a photo.  That's my kind of ride. Electra bike complete with board rack and fish.

Lots of cameras out there as well. Here's a shot of Lisa from Swell Stuff shooting me shooting her. Swell Stuff is a great little shop that repairs wetsuits. They are a good addition to the neighborhood as it is better to keep that rubber on your back rather then in the landfill.

Now this was the highlight for me. Kari and Ben from Olive & Ivy, a little Leucadia apparel company, were out showing off there tees. This is one that is a huge seller. It's called Eat, Sleep, Surf.  Here's a shot of Kirk who on many-o-days lives the dream.

More cool tees by Olive & Ivy. I found their site one night be accident and spent a good hour looking at all their tees getting inspired. They have such cool designs.

New Tak Board

This is cool. Seitaku "Tak" Aoyama of  Studio Aiuto sent over some shots of his amazing new graphic he did for his board. The board was a collaboration between Tak and local shaper Seth Cutter.

This design is crazy. Tak has a really unique and super detailed style. I really like it. You get lost in it. (If you remember we featured him for his fin art.) You have to see this design up close. It tells a story. Tak and his lovely wife Jamie will be displaying art at the Leucadia Art Walk this Sunday. Check them out. They will be set up on the north side of the Local Frame Shop.

Made of scrap fabric these tees are hand made and really cool. If you want one for yourself or your kid's first day at school contact her here for pricing and available sizes.

Bobby Bethard Wins The 2009 World Bodysurfing Championship... Again!

Bethard, top left getting ready for his heat.

I got this email and photos from Rodney that our friend and neighbor Bobby Bethard, at age 72, won the 55 and older 2009 World Bodysurfing Championship. Those of you who know Bobby know that he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. A true Leucadian and an amazing waterman. At 72 he goes out every day, even on the biggest days, and kills it. Truly inspiring.

For those of you who are football fans you know him for his life in that sport. For me, a clueless non-sports guy, I have to admit I didn't even know what he did or who he was until later when my dad, a diehard Chargers fan, filled me in. I only knew Bobby as the guy you always wanted to stop and chat with in the water.

I believe that this is the 3rd year in a row that Bobby won this event. From what I've seen of him in the water this isn't his last. Congratulations Bobby!

ED BOBBY WAS REALLY ON FIRE BEATING THE COMPETITION BY A LANDSLIDE AND FINISHING HIS LAST WAVE WITH A SMOOOOTH UNDER WATER TAKEOFF ASPINNER AND CONNECTING ALL THE WAY FROM OUT SIDE TO THE SHORE.  AS THE CROWD CHEERED HIM ON. YAHOO BOBBY BETHARD IS THE 2009 MASTERS BODYSURFING CHAMP AGE BRACKET 55 AND UP HES 72. RODNEY

$10 Brewer Gun

Mikey Brooker of La Jolla stopped by the Murphy shaping room the other day and brought with him a 7'2" Brewer Gun he got for $10 at a garage sale! Mikey has an amazing quiver and a very supportive wife. He was also the one who has the 5'4" Canyon Fish we posted on a while back. He has promised to drag his entire quiver out and let us go through it someday. That should be a blast. Great find Mikey!

Kipp

Here is a shot of my friend Kipp from last week. David, Kipp and I have been posting up at the beach on Thursdays, trading off with the kids and snapping shots. The surf has been meager at best but we have been making the best of it. Kipp likes his boards old school, heavy and flat. This is his G&S 9.4 comp nose rider. A fun board. I tried her out and did my best. I'm not sure it was pretty but I did have a blast.

For Sale 5'10" Wide Stringer Balsa and Reclaimed Redwood Quad Fish

I got the pleasure of spending time with Murphy's newest project today, a 5'10" quad fish with a 4" wide hollowed out balsa and reclaimed redwood stringer. This board is so amazing. Everyone who stopped in today felt her up and drooled over her. Many left and went straight for the flower shop to buy a little something in hopes to get clearance from their better halves. I have to admit that I was one of those dreaming of this board. If it doesn't sell I'm thinking hard about making her mine.

If you want to take a look or have the cash to bring her home. Give Dennis a call 760-765-3998 and set up an appointment. If you do buy it please, oh please let me ride it at least once. The price is $750, which to me is a steal. Tell him you saw it here and I'll give you a Wax Buddy.

New Crafty Keel Fin Tee

Alia and I have been busy doing our crafts and came up with a cool little tee we made together. Nothing more fun then to make something with your kids. I love how it came out and she gets a kick out of seeing me wear it.

13 Month Old Atticus Catches 1st Wave

My friends Rich and Allie sent this in. It is of their 13 month old son Atticus and his first session at cardiff. Pretty darn cool in my book.

As a side note Allie is looking for a surf mom or dad to do trade outs on shore. If you are interested please contact Allie here. She is in need of some surf time herself.

New Blog - My Trip of Passion - by Rochelle Ballard

Rochelle has been spending a lot of time in Leucadia lately. A Neptune local from back in the day she feels the vibe and likes to spend time here when she is in town. When she was here last I talked her into starting her own blog. MyTripOfPassion.blogspot.com She was new to the scene but has been really getting into it.

Now that she is off tour she is promoting her wellness passion project, Surf Into Yoga. Looking to share the gift of Yoga with other surfers as it has brought her a lot of well being and balance to her own life as a pro surfer. After seeing what it could do for her she felt she should share it with others.

It has been interesting to watch her go through this process of switching gears. Coming off a 17 year profession as a touring pro to now conceiving a plan to help others, producing the project, and starting a business from scratch in a whole new field.

I've been inspired by it all as she is now coming from the athlete side to the business side and committing to learn something new every day.  It has been cool to watch her grow through all this, struggle and still stay focused on her goals.

All and all it will be fun to see how she does in her new life as a free surfer, yoga ambassador and business woman. It will also be fun to watch it unfold on her blog. If she takes on the challenges of her new life the same way she took on Teahupoo or Back Door she is going to do really well. We are rooting for Rochelle!
