Wax Man by Rodney McCoubrey

My friend and local recycle artist Rodney McCoubrey did his first wax sculpture from bits and pieces he found in Baja. He gets a wax buddy for sure. Thanks for sharing Rodney.

Driftwood and Surf Wax Shark by Chris Miller

Chris Miller and his drift wood, wax and leaf shark. I have to admit it put a smile on my face. Great work, Chris! I really dig the leaf tail fin. Very creative. I think having one for Rodney's  Fish at your house has really inspired you.

For your efforts you score a brand new Wax Buddy . But you have to come up and surf with me to pick it up.

Dirty Wax Art - Trilogy

I realized I haven't put up any wax art lately. This is one I did a while back I call Trilogy. Believe it or not I have this one and everyone I've made plus the ones people have given me up on my wall. It makes me smile during the day when I look over and see these dirty little wax creations looking back at me.

Last year I would have stripped my board and dumped it in the trash. Now my old wax has a new life and I have fun and get inspired. A win win for sure.

For those of you still willing to do a little dirty wax art I still have Wax Buddies to hand out. They just sent me a new shipment a few weeks back so I have plenty to go around. Send them in and stick the little dirty creation on your bookshelf. You'll feel good about it I promise.

Dirty Wax Art - Mini Quad

Here is the latest dirty wax art to come through, a sweet little quad fish complete with deck patch. This little guy was up late using his mom's best utensils to shape this bad boy. He was so excited to claim his Wax Buddy he left his post at the top of the GV stairs, leaving tourists free to walk up with their body boards in peace.

Necko and the Bunny Man - Dirty Wax Art

Portrait of Miss Anne's cat Necko. The real Necko was accidentally run through the dryer and survived. She is the most zen cat you will ever meet. Nothing bothers her except the sight of the laundry being done. If you look closely you can see some dryer lent in her ear. Very authentic.

Portrait of Miss Anne's rabbit Merlin a.k.a. the Bunny Man. Merlin is a very cool rabbit they rescued.

Here is Miss Anne and Daisy who stopped by to show me her dirty wax art and claim her new Wax Buddy. Anne did a great job with the wax art. I really liked the use of clam shells, flower peddles and leaves. Very creative Miss Anne.

Shannon and Her Wax Buddy

The guys at Wax Buddy sent me a box of their famous wax combs to give out to people who do our dirty wax art project. Shannon was the first to send one in and scored the first one. Here she is with her new Wax Buddy in hand. Her boyfriend Chris Miller did a great job with the photo shoot. Little does she know that he is going to walk off with that as soon as she sets it down. Enjoy your photo Shannon. You'll never see it again.

Dirty Wax Art - Flower by Shannon

Chris Miller's better half gave me a dirty wax flower. Shannon, who is great and very understanding of Chris's tee shirt and surf habit is the first non surfing girlfriend to send in a sculpture. Thank you Shannon for keeping this project alive!

As a motivator we have teamed up with the Wax Buddy to hook you budding artists up. I will be selectively (has to be local) distributing some free Wax Buddies to those of you who show us a little something special in the fine art of dirty wax sculpture.  Some of you might make it on the Wax Buddy Blog as well. It is a fun site. Check it out here.

I'f you've never seen the Wax Buddy check it out. It is a brilliant idea. Paint scraper meets wax comb. Why didn't I think of that?

Support the Mattson Family and Buy My Dirty Wax Art for $20

"Rogue Wave"
Dimensions: 3" w x 2.75" h
Medium: My Dirty Surf Wax

Alia working hard at my wax pile up.

Hummm. Dirty wax. It looks gross and smells just as bad but it's so much fun to make stuff with it.

After our hard work we did a dance off to some Beastie Boys.

With all the art shows going on this weekend and the promise of a swell showing up, Alia and I decided we better switch out the winter wax on Binki II, put on the summer coat, and make a new wax sculpture for the Mattson Benefit.

After putting on some music we went to work. With months of wax build up it wasn't easy but we pulled it off. We sure could have used a Wax Buddy (J.P. can you hook a brother up?) With fresh dirty surf wax in hand we thought about it a bit and decided on our subject, a little wave we call "Rogue".

In the spirit of the Mattson Family Art Benefit we are selling "Rogue Wave" for $20 or the highest bidder. All proceeds will be donated to the benefit.

Email me for bids. edlewis@edlewisdesign.com

A Little More Wax Art

Ok, so I got inspired again. This time with the help of Alia.  I was itching to do some more wax art and this is what came out of me. It doesn't really look like Alia but it was the best I can do. She loves it. She asks to see it all the time.

Dirty Wax Art - Wave by Lucas 13

Today I received this special piece of wax art by a long time friend Lucas. He did a really good job and even included a little wax man in the tube.

I met Lucas when he was 2 years old and now get to watch him surf. In fact last weekend I had the pleasure of noticing some kid surfing really well and then realized it was him.  That was a cool moment. I was able to see him as a surfer not just a grom. His younger brother Logan is surfing really good as well.  We'll get some shots of them both up here shortly.

Lucas was the first to send in his wax art. I hope there are more of you out there working away on your dirty wax.

New Form Of Wax Art

Erik came over today to show me his wax art. He rides for Sticky Bumps and gets all the R&D wax from the factory.  This time he got a bunch of colored wax so he waxed up his fish with these checkers. When he showed me I couldn't help but take a picture.

More Wax Art- Wave

Ok I'm hooked. I can't stop making dirty surf wax art.  The feel of wax on my fingers and the smell of feet and coconut.  What's not to love?  This little wave took about an hour to make. It was out of a ball of wax I had sitting in my garage for about 6 months.  I have had so much fun with this and liked the end result so much I have started to keep them on my mantel. People are stoked to see them as they come through the house.  In about six months when my wax is ready to be changed I'll make a new one. That is unless people send me some of their own wax!

If you want to do your own and save a ball of wax from the dump, make them up and send me some photos. Ed Lewis

Surf Wax Art.

I am well known for my wax job. I will go six months or more with the same wax build up. Kirk is the same way.  Erik goes crazy over this.  He rides for Sticky Bumps so he gets tons of wax and is always trying out new wax formulas.  One day he was so disgusted that he even offered to rewax my board for me. I politly declined. Besides, it took me six months to get that wax job!

This type of wax job has it's advantages and disadvantages. On the upside it works great. A couple of seasons of wax makes a pretty good blend. You can't buy this stuff. This current wax job was originated sometime in summer so it has a good base of warm wax and is now mixed in with the cold formula. The down side to the caked on wax job is that it looks really bad and it gets really heavy.  It must add a pound at least to the board.

Today I finally couldn't take it any more and decided to rewax my board. Since I have six months of wax I tend to have a decent size ball at the end of the stripping. This time was no different.

I hate to throw out old wax as it isn't the best thing for the environment. I have a few balls floating around my garage just sitting collecting dust.

Today I dicided to do something different with the wax. I decided to put my years of art school to use and make my sculpture professor proud. After looking at this ball of wax I started seeing a face in it. So with a little work I was able to bring my ball of wax to life.

After seeing the results I was pretty stoked. I even put it up on my mantel.  Who knew that your old dirty surf wax would be a pretty good medium to make sculptures out of it? Besides that wax was with me on some amazing waves. It seems fitting that I show it some respect and give it a life after my board.

So the next time you rewax your board, do the environment a favor and make that dirty ball into something cool. When your done, take a snap shot and send it our way and we'll post it.
