The Wave by Cheryl Sorg

My friend and local artist Cheryl Sorg sent this over to me. It's titled "The Wave".  For those who don't know her work she makes art out of the words and sentences in books. All the lines you see are words cut from the book and reassembled into form. This piece is made from the short story by Haruki Murakami called 'The Seventh Man' in which a man tells the story of witnessing his best friend being washed away by a giant wave in a typhoon when he was a kid, and how that event affected the rest of his life.

This piece and others will be on display at the Eric Phleger Gallery.

Opening for the show is Thursday Oct. 7th 6-8pm

Cheryl Sorg Global Freeze Project Sat. April 17th

Local artist/activist Cheryl Sorg has been speaking out in her art against the problem of Human Trafficking and Sex Slavery. She has done numerous pieces on this subject and is now hosting a Global Freeze Project this Saturday the 17th at 12pm at Fashion Valley Mall. See here for details.

The Glogal Freeze project is a non-intrusive method of raising awareness for a cause that leaves the people surrounded by the event inspired instead of fearing for their safety.

Here's the Basic Concept:
For our Freeze Project moments, we would like to draw a couple of hundred people at a time to participate in drawing attention to some of the social injustices of the world. Instead of protesting, we would like to create an experience that is fun, non-intrusive (in your face activism), and inclusive. We believe that we could use “the Freeze” to draw attention in a crowd, which will then be followed up with a brief handout to people about a particular social injustice in the world.
How a Freeze Project Moment Looks:
  • Participants will be asked to show up a designated time and place.
  • Participants will then proceed to the “Freeze” space and blend themselves into a crowd as if they were regulars in that particular environments (e.g., malls, events, outdoor shopping areas, etc.).
  • A cue will be given by the director of the Freeze moment.
  • Participants will then stop what they were doing and stay frozen for the next 5 minutes until they receive another cue telling them that the freeze is over.
  • Following the freeze, participants will handout a couple of print material each to people observing them (with or without conversation).
  • That’s it! Enjoy the rest of the day at the venue where the Freeze takes place.

Recycled Art - Water Mosaic from Old Surf Mags by Cheryl Sorg

My friend and local artist Cheryl Sorg hooked me up with a few of her recycled art pieces using old surf magazines as the medium. This 18" x 18" piece is made entirely of wave and water shots cut into 1 inch squares and taped together to form a mosaic.  We showed this work before as large sheets. She took those and made smaller pieces from it. I love it. Thanks Cheryl!

Valentines for a Cause

My friend and local artist Cheryl Sorg hosted a very special event last weekend at the Pannikin. She organized a Valentine Making Party for an organization called LOVE146 , a group that supports victims of the child trafficking and sex trade. The Valentines made will be sent to the Philippines to be given to the kids they are helping.

74 Valentines were created that rainy day... see them all HERE

Cheryl has become very passionate about this cause and has raised money through sales of her art to support organizations that make a difference.

Check out Cheryl's site for updates on events and ways you can help.

Special thanks to the Pannikin for all their support. They went well out of their way to accommodate the change in wheather.

Cheryl Sorg's Art for a Cause

My friend and local artist Cheryl Sorg has been working on a project to help bring awareness to  Human Trafficking. After reading a book on the subject Cheryl was inspired to do what she can to help support organizations that stop and prevent these crimes. In an effort to raise awareness she is donating proceeds from the sale of her thumbprint works as well as organizing an auction that she will be selling thumbprints of celebrities that believe in the cause.

I encourage you to take a look at her site and learn more about her cause and the creative ways she is going about making a difference.

Thumb Prints by Cheryl Sorg

My neighbor Cheryl has been working on these really cool finger print pieces lately. I would stop in and bug her while she was working on them so I got to see the progress. I was intrigued even from the beginning but once finished I was really impressed by the detail of it and the use of book covers and such as the medium. If you follow her work she normally does a full book's copy cut out and reassembled together as large objects. These are smaller at about 24" high and uses a multitude of book covers and text from her favorite readings to make the piece.

If you want one of your own finger prints with your own favorite books and such as the medium let her know. If you get one send me some photos so we can post it up.

By the way, is it just me or do thumbprints look like barrels?

The lovely Cheryl Sorg has been working away on her new show for months now. It is finally done and the work is amazing! How does she find the time to cut every word out??? However I would have been really impressed if she had saved me a slice! It looks so good. Hummm... pizza in the form of a fin. Does it get any better? Goda di! (Enjoy)

New Show in Town - Cheryl Sorg - Text • Context - Enc. Library

Our own Cheryl Sorg's work is being displayed at the Encinitas Library. Her work went up last Friday and will be there until March 31st.  The show is of past, present and current works she has been producing, which is quite a treat. If you've ever visited her website and read her bio you would see that her work has been displayed at some renowned museums and galleries. Pretty cool that we get the chance to see her work in our own back yard.

We featured her on the site a while back where she dismantled surf mags to create some amazing pieces. This time around she is dismantling entire novels and reassembling them into huge forms that can be read from start to finish.

I have been lucky enough to live next door to Cheryl for the past 4 years and have been able to witness the hard work she puts into these pieces. She once told me that a finished piece can take a 1000 hours or more to complete! She cuts an entire book up line by line, word by word or letter by letter to create her masterpiece. Pretty amazing seeing that she has two young kids as well!

She is having an artist reception March 14th from 1 - 3 pm

For more photos of the exhibit go to her Facebook gallery.

Also below is a bit from her artist statement. It gives you an idea why she does what she does.

Enjoy.

"Literature, and its ability to transfix and transport, has served as the inspiration for my work for a number of years. A humble but passionate translator, I use books to create large and elaborate constructions, forms in which a viewer can get lost, as in a well-told tale.

I began by making small-scale pieces for the purpose of photographing them, the photo being the final ‘product’. Quickly I set aside the camera, however, and focused entirely on the making of the sculptures and installations themselves, wanting to see how they would morph - expand - without the resulting photo in mind. Along with this new focus came a new set of parameters designed to alleviate my guilt over ‘destroying’ books, objects I consider sacred .... that the books must remain in their entirety, and readable, in the final pieces.

I achieve this in most of the pieces by cutting the book (two copies of the book, actually, in order to get both sides of each page, and therefore the text in its entirety) apart line by line - sometimes even word by word, letter by letter - and assembling the text with clear tape into a variety of configurations. The content of the texts is integral to the the work, the stories within their pages informing and inspiring the shape each piece ultimately takes.

Many of the books I use in my work tell stories of obsession, or the obsessive pursuit - Moby Dick, The Odyssey and Lolita are prime examples. As I strive to keep the work within the strict parameters I’ve set for myself, and as the pieces become larger, more complex and time- and labor-intensive, obsession serves not only as the leitmotif, but as my own (for better or worse!) personal methodology as well. Should literature follow in the footsteps of music and film, with books going to the wayside like so many LP’s and VHS tapes, I make my contribution to their preservation with my archive of re-configured books. In my own obsessive fashion, I am building a unique ‘library’ comprised of classics and personal favorites - a large, idiosyncratic, readable-only-in-theory, and most unwieldy library to be sure!"

Recycled Surfer

Here is some really cool art from my friend and neighbor Cheryl Sorg. She is known in the art world for dismantling entire books word for word and then reassembling them into huge spiralled panels that read from the center out. Check out her site. What she does is amazing and beautiful what she does.

The pictures above are of two pieces she did for her husband, an avid Beacons surfer. The first one is called "Kinds of Blue". It's made of magazine paper, 1 1/2-inch squares cut from images of waves and water from surf magazines and stuck together with clear tape. This one is approx. four feet by nine feet!

The second one is Untitled. It too is out of magazine paper, the same 1 1/2-inch squares cut from images, this time of the ocean at sunset from surf magazines and clear tape. This one is 20" x 20".

When I started to do The Leucadia Project I asked her to share these. I've had the pleasure of seeing them in person and they are amazing. I love the fact that they are created from surf magazines.
