Taped Off - One of my new favorite blogs

photo-766718.JPG.jpg

Peter St Pierre is a legend in Leucadia but more importantly the world of surfing. We are lucky to have him on our planet. He of course is the one that paints those trippy universe scenes on surfboards for his company Moonlight Glassing. I think it's been around for 30 or 40 years. Kipp and I have always looked up to him and somehow I just found his own blog called Taped Off. I love the about...

ABOUT

I really like making surfboards. Shots from our shop Moonlight Glassing. Plus anything else I think is cool. think of this blog as a spinoff of Surfy Surfy but with crappier photos and more typos. --Peter St Pierre

A while back JP passed off one of our handplanes to him at the shop and months later he handed this off to JP. The writing on the bottom said "Enjoy The Universe". We were so stoked he did this I couldn't get the smile off my face for months. I still get a warm fuzzy every-time I look at this. THANK YOU PETER!!!!

At any rate his new blog is a few months old now and filled with tons for great posts from Moonlight Glassing. It is worth a daily click for sure.  Enjoy!

Surfy Surfy Handplane

If you get a chance stop by Surfy Surfy to check out JP's St. Pierre's handplane we did together. Designed and painted by JP, shaped by me and glassed by Kipp. This thing is so cool. I had no idea JP had such a talent for drawing. JP really wanted to make a handplane that looked like the Bonzer Bumble Bee so we made this little beauty with a diamond tail.

This one is not for sale as he liked it so much he kept it for him himself. However we are making more and if you want one just let us know and JP will paint it up for you.

Handplane Love'n

(Click for larger image)

Here's what some broken boards and a little love looks like. These two are for sale at Surfy Surfy. Hurry though as they aren't lasting long. If you want a custom let us know as well and we'll gladly make you one.

Fresh rescued boards are being made into these fun little bundles of resin tint goodness every week so don't be shy, contact us , and we'll send you over pics to see if you'd like to take one home to meet your wife (or husband) and kids. Believe me they'll be stoked.

Don't forget to save us those broken boards AND your old tea bag wetsuits. We need those as well.

Thanks to everyone who has supported this project. We can't tell you how stoked we are to meet everyone and to do something this fun with trash! It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Enjoy!

Thanks again to GoPro for all their support! If you want a GoPro version of our handplanes just let us know.

Bonzer Love'n - I Got It Bad

Had the fortune of stopping by Surfy Surfy today and decided to try out their board demo program. JP had been telling me he has REAL boards that he lets people demo. The same boards you see on his site. I've been a fish love'n man for sometime but there is something about the Bonzer that intrigues me so I gave it a go.

JP suggested the 5'10" Bumble Bee three fin Bonzer. He said it would float me similar to my fish. He was right. It had all the volume I like and it was an easy transition form my board.

I took her out and was seriously blown away. It was wide and full like my fish but it has the ability to do these bottom turns and whitewash rebounds that I just don't do on my fish. It also had a gas peddle. It was really fast.

I even had those moments when you feel like Tom Curren doing a bottom turn. I haven't done a proper bottom turn, well ever, but it felt like I did. Of course I didn't look like him I just had my mouth open and that look in my eye like I suddenly knew what I was doing. I love those moments. You feel like super star.

I am seriously sold. I'd like to properly test it for a couple more sessions but I could honestly see myself buying one of these. It felt like a great all around board.

My hat goes off to the Cambell Bro's for making a great board. Thanks to JP for the demo it opened my eyes to something new. Next time I want to try out Eli's Twin Pin!

Peace.

Enjoy Handplanes @ Surfy Surfy!

Yesterday was a big deal for Kipp and me. My friend JP at Surfy Surfy gave us the thumbs up and is now carrying our beloved handplanes.

On a personal level it was a huge compliment to have a second generation glasser be impressed enough to carry them. JP doesn't carry crap, and every single product in his shop he believes in. So you can see why we are so stoked.

On another level it goes to show that mission to do something positive environmentally in the surf industry is actually working! People are loving them and we are now not only saving foam from broken boards and manufacturing waste, we are now recycling old wetsuits as well to make our handles. More on that later...

This project has been an education as well as just plain fun. We are really excited to see how far we can take this and to see what sort of difference we can make in an industry that we love so much.

Stay tuned to see what happens next. We can't wait to find out ourselves!

Surfy Surfy Event Was a Blast

Boards boards and more boards.  They have some many AMAZING BOARDS!!!!!

The place was packed from start to finish and the vibe was great. Our very own master of all things swallowtail and hull, Manuel Carro was honorary DJ for the event.

Manuel has his own nook in the space which I thought was cool. It was like looking into the window of his mind.

Oh, and they have a Surfy Surfy tee for sale that I drew up for them based off of our TLP logo! If you buy one a portion of the proceeds go to help support my blogging habit. Please buy one. I have a bad habit.

Sacred Craft Day One

The guys I went to see, Grain crew Mike, Brad and Allen, were there to answer questions and share the stoke of wood board building. Here's a shot of forever stoked Kevin, a two time kit builder from LA with a third in his sights.

The booth was busy all day as people came in to see first hand what these boards are all about.  I have to admit I was a booth rat. They couldn't get ride of me as I kept asking questions and looking over their boards.

This is the board that I think is going to be amazing. It's copy of a 60's relic that somehow made it to their shop. It's called the Leaf. It's 4.6 and guys have been surfing these things. They hinted that I might get to demo one! Erik, you down to try her out?

Man of the weekend, Dick Brewer, was on hand to judge the shape off and take part in the festivities. I got a chance to say a few words to him and he was a really cool humble guy.

Dennis Murphy was up first in the shape off. He did really good. It was so much fun to watch.

Brewer came in and complemented Dennis on his shape. Dennis was blown away to meet him. He said later "That was soo cool. As a kid everyone wanted to be Dick Brewer. "

Erik was there to represent Sticky Bumps. He has a cool wax art project at the booth for kids.

Moonlight and Surfy Surfy were there. Good news for us Leucadians. We will soon have a new place to hang out. The old Longboard Grotto space will be the new site of the Surfy Surfy board shop!
Surf Heritage museum was there was some amazing boards.

Lots of great craftsmanship. This was a cool hand burned sign.

Lot's and lots of Brewer boards, old and new.

The old ads were posted up and were really cool. My favorite was John Peck.

Karl Eckstrom was there with his amazing asymmetrical boards.  I really wanted to ride this fish.

Eli Marandon was on hand to show off his work. He is one of David's favorite guys to shoot at Blacks. He is a well rounded guy, with skills in the shaping bay and in the water.

Eli has a new set of fins out based on his unique tall twin fins. These are shorter and wider with the same hatchet style template. I am hoping to demo a pair. They look like they will work good.

Murphy Brewer shaped and ready for judging.

This is what I like to see. I love how it looks like a guy in the '50s bought it for a $100 and was his daily ride to the beach.

MR was there. What can I say. I grew up with him as a hero.

Back today.  Hope to see you there.
