Double Feature at Birds Shed - This Friday and Saturday

Buy Tickets Here

Come see two of my favorite films of the year together in one night.  Manufacturing Stoke and Come Hell or High Water will play back to back this Friday and Saturday night only at Bird's Surf Shed. Does it get any better then that?

This event is in conjunction with Sacred Craft. The Friday show is the kick off event for the weekend. If you are coming into town make sure you get your tickets online here so you have seats.

I have had the great pleasure of touring with the misfit pictures crew to show Manufacturing Stoke and it has been a very special experience. The premier was at Bird's, the movie has circled the country as well as the globe and is now back home where it all began. It was always a dream of mine to make a film and I basicaly got to live the dream without all the hassle, so thank you guys for letting me tag along for the ride!

Pierce "misfit" Kavanagh, the man behind Manufacturing Stoke. The film itself is amazing but how it was made is just as incredible. There aren't that many things in this world we get to witness as miracles, but the making of this films to me was just that. How often do you have an idea for a project, and never get it off the ground? How often do you let budgets and life in general get in your way of making it happen? For most of us it is more then they want to admit. For Pierce he saw his vision so clearly that he let nothing stand in his way. Not the money, not the time, not the road blocks not the fact he had never before made a film. Witnessing his journey is amazing to me and as this gains momentum it gets even better. Here is to you Pierce for your hard work and faith that if you focus hard and do your best you can make something amazing.

Special thanks to Bird, Pierce and Petra Kavanagh who have come together to put this on.  Bird's shed is the best place ever to see a surf film. If you have been before you know what I mean. You can not find any other venue like this, period. It is an amazing experience.

Amazing boards everywhere so bring your check book. They are for sale.

The amazing visionary Bird and his lovely family. Another person who is off fulfilling his dream. Thank you Bird for reinventing the surf shop and bring your knowledge and expertise to our community.

Get Ready for a GREAT weekend. Manufacturing Stoke the Movie @ Bird's Shed

Bird Huffman (left) and Pierce Kavanagh at Bird's Surf Shed getting ready for the big premiere this Saturday/Sunday of Manufacturing Stoke. A lot of work has been going into this premiere and I am so stoked to be a part of this. The Saturday night show is SOLD OUT but there is a new Sunday 4pm spot open that still has tickets.

Buy yours online at www.manufacturingstoke.com. Don't wait for that night as it could be sold out.

ALSO there will be a broken board recycling effort going on at the event. Bring your broken boards to keep them from the landfills.

Bird's shed is ridiculous. I spent an afternoon in there drooling and taking photos. There are SO MANY boards that I want to ride. Roamer has it that if you wanted to take out a vintage board you can. You break it though you by it. I love it.

Manufacturing Stoke World Premiere May 21st.

The world premiere of Manufacturing Stoke will be held at Bird's Surf Shed May 21st.

Tickets are being presold now at www.manufacturingstoke.com. If you want to go, hurry. I heard from Pierce half are taken and it's only been up for a couple of days!

The film will feature some amazing body surfing and will highlight Enjoy Handplanes as well. We have been so stoked to be a part of this film. The people behind it are the most inspiring thing of all. Pierce, Petra, Geoffrey and Max and all the people who have contributed are doing this for the right reasons, to educate and inspire us to to make a change.  I love it.

About the film:

No other sport is so intrinsically linked to nature. Some call it a spiritual experience, most call it indescribable. And yet, in becoming the multi-billion dollar industry it is today, a great paradox has risen. Surfers are indeed directly connected to the earth’s pulse and yet a majority of the materials used are environmentally toxic.

The story begins in the 1960’s, the golden era of surfing, a time of innocence and discovery. Surf culture erupted onto the collective consciousness and became the epitome of cool. Fast forward to December 5th, 2005 and the closing of Clark Foam for environmental reasons, the largest surf blanks manufacturer in the world. Not only was the event a wake-up call for many to shift from petroleum-base products to more eco-friendly materials, it also reframed the foundation of a stagnant culture.

Enter surfing’s renaissance, an era where the new generation is completely changing what it means to be a surfer. And amid timid efforts from the industry’s biggies, a plethora of grassroots up-and-comers is redefining what a surfer is supposed to ride. From wooden surfboards, handplanes and alaias to recycled blanks and organic clothing, wave riding is taking on a new soul.

Manufacturing Stoke is an introspective look into the surfing culture’s struggle to be beneficial unto itself, a tapestry of both influential and eclectic members of the surfing community that are constantly striving for positive change.

Sacred Craft Eco Trailer Package for Manufacturing Stoke

I'm having the pleasure of traveling with Pierce and Petra Kavanagh to Sacred Craft to walk the show and for the two of them to promote their new film Manufacturing Stoke. When I awake this morning I couldn't help but be stoked on what they where making to pass out at the show. In the spirt of changing the way the surf industry consumes, Petra came up with the idea to make envelopes of recycled surf mags and faux DVD's out of shopping bags with their web address on it. My hat goes off to them for such a cool idea.

I'll be taking photos of Sacred Craft again this year and will post highlights after the show!  Stay tuned.

Manufacturing Stoke

Our friend Pierce Kavanagh of misfit pictures is making a documentary on sustainability in the surf industry called Manufacturing Stoke.

We first met Pierce at the Cardiff Classic Green Fair where after meeting a host of green surf companies had a spark of inspiration and the idea for this film was born.

Pierce, who recently graduated from film school went home that night with the idea for the film and proceeded to put a crew together to take on the task. Originally set to be a small web piece, the film suddenly took on a life of it's own and quickly gained attention from companies and personalities in the industry who had a thing or two to say about the subject. In the end there are some 30 plus interviews and 80 hours of film on the subject all of which have been kept under wraps as to who they all are and what they have said. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together and what these industry leaders have to say on such a pertinent subject.

As for the the trailer, which was released last night, it is a monumental step for Pierce and his indie crew Petra Kavanagh, Max Schmige, Geoffrey Smart and Sara Iyer who have been working nonstop for months now.

I personally can't wait to see how the project all comes together and to finally see who everyone is that was filmed and what was said.

Pierce, Petra, Max, Geoffrey, Sara congratulations my friends and good luck!
