Surfrider Art Gala Tonight!

Our very own Allison Renshaw will be a part of the Surfrider Art Gala tonight. An Encinitas local, Allison has recently had a solo show at the Oceanside Museum of Art entitled "Plastic Fantastic" with her fascinating mixed media pieces. See more at http://www.allisonrenshaw.com/.

My friend and local artist, longboarder and handplaner Allison Renshaw is also featured at the Eric Phleger Gallery's current show. Here are two pieces she has displayed. Enjoy.

Candy

Kipp made this one as an experiment in color and texture. It looks like a piece of candy. There is a lot going on but I have to admit it turned out really cool.

The process of making these handplanes takes awhile and is a labor of love. Each board we make is like a little friend to us. The process is interesting. You start off with a little white ghost and then when you add color it becomes alive, it takes on a personality of it's own that makes you want to see it take life into it's final form.

This little guy grew on us, as it had such a unique personality. I certainly didn't want to see it go, but it didn't stick around long. It was for sale for a day and it got snatched up by my friends and local water couple Rich and Allie. It made me feel better though that it was still in the neighborhood. Go have fun little candy board. You have good owners now and will spend many days slotted in barrels.

13 Month Old Atticus Catches 1st Wave

  

 

My friends Rich and Allie sent this in. It is of their 13 month old son Atticus and his first session at cardiff. Pretty darn cool in my book.  

As a side note Allie is looking for a surf mom or dad to do trade outs on shore. If you are interested please contact Allie here. She is in need of some surf time herself.

Rich on daddy duty. You can tell a cool dad when mom is in the water and dad's on the beach with the kids.

From what I have discovered through this site is that there is no shortage of talented people in Leucadia. Everyone I know has something they do that blows me away.  

Allie is one of those people. I first met her and her husband Rich in the line up.  They have been surfing the same spot for years and I would watch them both surf as they had the place dialed. 

The thing that impressed me most about Allie was the fact that she was still surfing until two weeks before she gave birth to their son Atticus. As a dad myself I remember feeling protective of her and watching to make sure she was Ok on the inside after a wave.  Apparently Dugan was the same way and would let her have any wave she wanted.

Knowing people from the water you tend to know many important things about them, like, will they make the take off on the set waves, when sharing a peak do they tend to go right or left and do they get caught behind the outside section or do they always make it through to the inside.

Those things are important for sure. It's amazing that with all the people you surf with I bet you have the answers to those question for each and everyone of them.

Now that I have been doing this site I get the joy of finding out more about people I know from the water. For Allie it was only yesterday that I discovered the talent she has when she sent me a link to her site. I was really stoked to see how great her work is.
