Grain Re-Evelution was a blast

The Grain Re-Evolution adventure a.k.a. "Grainstock" was an unbelievable experience.  We shared the experience with La Jolla legend and east coast transplant Roger Beal, his lovely wife Lisa and son Tony. They took us (Pierce and Petra Kavanagh, Max Schmige and myself) up to Maine form Boston in their motor home. Here are a few pics from the trip.

Thank God for Roger's driving skills.  If you have ever traveled through Boston you may have noticed that they have some pretty crazy drivers. Roger is an old pro but it was sketchy none the less.

Pierce and Petra. The sun was bright and shinny after weeks of storms.

Roger's son Tony is an old soul at just 16. Not only is one talented artist and actor he speak a few languages and even gives card readings.

Max is the misfit pics director of photography for Manufacturing Stoke. Of German and Finish decent he is a man of few words and a genius behind the camera.

The motor home was great because while on the road we got last minute details done.

Once into Maine we had a challenge finding a close parking spot. Luckily we had a couple of bikes to get us down the the demo event.

It was good to see Rey from Entropy Resin here a the event. Re has helped us out a ton with *enjoy.

Long sands beach is a really cool spot. Once I got there I ditched the camera and went bodysurfing and surfing. This is a photo of a photo hung at Grain but it gives you an idea.

The Grain shop is everything I thought it would be. After 6 years of dreaming I was finally there and it felt so good.

Brad from Grain hosted a round table discussion on sustainability. It was so much fun to be a part of that.

One of my favorite things is to meet everyone at these events. Having a booth at this was the perfect way for me to interact and answer questions about our handplanes.

Max brought his vintage film camera with a slew of specialty films. He would set up and spend 20 mins for one shot.

Pierce being Pierce.

The Corduroy Gallery put on an art show that was very cool. Tyler Briggs the owner of Corduroy Gallery was actually the coordinator for the entire event. She deserves a standing ovation for doing the job she did.

One of my favorite parts of the event was seeing Pierce and Petra's film Manufacturing Stoke on the side of the the Grain Barn. What a cool experience.

The Speed of Sand was the house band. They where great.

The bonfire was HUGE. it had to be at least 25 feet high.

At Grain even the clouds make waves. It's hard to see here but I watched these clouds spin off into little barrels all morning.

I think one of our favorite parts was waking up on the farm. It was great to relax in such a beautiful place and the dew was so beautiful on the grass.

If you went then you know how much fun it was. If you didn't there is always next year. Looks like they are already planning the next one.

Good News Bad News

Life is the ultimate dichotomy.  Good / Bad, Right / Wrong, Up / Down. Depending on how you look at it, something is one thing to one person and another to, well, another. This board is the perfect example. Snapped from a rogue 15 foot set and the cause of bummed morning to a local who lost a great board. To me, well a gold-mine of fresh foam.  All how you see it.

With a swell with so much juice there are most likely a 100 broken boards out there. Good news for shop owners, bad news for the owners of those boards but again, good news for me! Isn't life grand? If you come across one, keep it from the trash, take it home and contact us so we can pick it up. Your planet will thank you and so will I!

On another note this was another causality of the swell. Just after I got that broken board I went to shoot some shots and my foot caught the strap and it yanked it out of my hand crashing the camera to the ground and braking my lens OFF!  Oh my, this time it was bad for me but who knows, is it good for someone else? Anyone want a lens to fix? Luckily my pops has a spare lens for me to use for my trip to Grain next week! More on that later...

Vote for Rasta!

Our good friend Mick Waters has done a collaboration with Dave Rastovich for a short they entered to the new Taylor Steele Innersection video. It is up now. If you are a fan of Dave's or Mick go to the site and vote for them. I love the short becuase it is the only one that I saw that has bodysurfing and classic fluid soul surfing. A huge and needed contrast to all the airs.

Watch it, enjoy and if you dig it vote for them!

Movie Screening of "Heart of the Sea" this Saturday.

Our friend Tony Kendall is putting this on. Should be fun for a good cause.

Celebrate & learn about the life of Rell Kapolioka'ehukai Sunn with a movie screening fundraiser: Heart of the Sea!

The Rell Sunn Educational Fund and Kapolioka’ehukai Outrigger Canoe Club are having a special event this Saturday, August 27th to support the cancer research, environmental education, and the sports of surfing and outrigger canoe paddling. The beautiful Arterra Lounge located at the Del Mar Marriott will host the evening filled with music, hula, live and silent auction and a screening of the film Heart Of The Sea, the award winning documentary about Rell Sunn.

Rell Sunn was the first female lifeguard in Hawaii and she and her friends started the Women’s Professional Surfing association in the 1970’s. Her grace and style and spirit of giving back to the community was inspirational. The RSEF continues to support the many causes that Auntie Rell believed in and continues with their yearly children’s Menehune Surf Contest now going into its 37th year.

Tickets range from $15 to $30 and the night will have food, drinks, hula, and aloha. Some of the items featured in the live and silent auction are a fantastic find. There is a VIP Package for two to the 2012 Super Bowl game, signed Paul McCartney Guitar, signed Carlos Santana guitar, signed U2 Joshua Tree album, signed Rolling Stone album, trip for two to Costa Rica, family of four package to Orlando, signed Justin Beiber photo, and much much more.

Nathan Oldfield's Stillbirth and Surfing A Grief Story

From our friend Nathan Oldfield.

"Mark Twain said that there aren’t enough words in all the languages in the world to express the sorrow of losing a child. This is a short film I produced while grieving for my daughter, Willow, who was stillborn.

This short actually forms the centrepiece of a feature length surf film I made, called Seaworthy. Since the film’s release, I have received many heartfelt words of sympathy & encouragement. There have been scores of letters & emails from surfers from all over the world that have been sensitive & authentic & moving. I have been especially touched by the messages from those who have travelled their own grief journeys. I am awed & humbled that my work somehow resonated with others’ broken hearts.

A common theme echoed among the beautiful feedback I’ve received is that the story deserves a wider audience. Surf films, by definition, appeal to only a limited demographic, & the kind of surf films I make are left-of-centre even within surfing circles. So I decided to post this online, in the hope that it may reach a few others, especially those who may be living with loss & longing.

All of us experience & express grief in varied ways, which is a good thing since we’re all different. Because I’m a surfer, this is how I gave expression to my experience of bereavement.

Thanks for taking the time to watch. [Nathan]"
